Complementary Healing Practices That Fits Your Particular Needs!

It’s so nice to know that we have options when it comes to our overall wellness. Holistically Being has created a guide, breaking down the four different alternative methods to healing our mind, body, and spirit. The four methods are mind-Body medicine, biologically based, body-based therapy, and energy-based techniques. Which of the following do you prefer to use?

Mind-Body medicine

Meditation

Meditation is the best way to mentally reduce stress and develop an air of peace and tranquility. There are different forms of meditation. It’s all about choosing the right one for you.

• Transcendental Meditation (TM)- You sit in a Lotus position (butt on floor with legs folded), internally chant a mantra, and focus on rising above the negativity.

• Heart Rhythm Meditation- This form of meditation concentrates primarily on the heart, with an emphasis on breathing. Set your intentions, sit up straight, breathe fully, slowly, and consciously. Find your heartbeat and breathe through your heart. HRM is a triple threat form of meditation because individuals experience physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits. It helps the individual better handle stress and develop an appreciative and joyous spirit.

• Mindfulness Meditation- A fave among many spiritualists, and my fave, Mindfulness Meditation helps keep you in the present moment, so you don’t worry about things from the past and become anxious about what could transpire in the future. Sit with eyes closed, legs crossed, the back straight, and attention placed on breathing in and out. For the period of meditation, the individual focuses on his or her breathing, and when wandering thoughts emerge, one returns to focusing on the object of meditation, breathing. Research has found that a regimen of mindfulness can reduce anxiety, depression, and perceived distress.

Relaxation

Reduces stress, alleviates symptoms of depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia. Other benefits include lowering your heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate.

Hypnosis

Hypnosis empowers you to change your unconscious thoughts.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy uses scents to soothe your mind and body, which may help relieve nausea, pain, and stress. The great thing about aromatherapy is there are a few methods and they all can be done in your sacred space. The common methods are candles, potpourri, incense, and essential oils.

Biologically-Based

Herbal medicine

Herbal medicine involves herbalists, herbal medicine practitioners, and even some traditional medicine practitioners using plants, or parts of plants, to treat injuries, illnesses, and improve overall health and wellness. That includes seeds, leaves, stems, bark, roots, flowers, and extracts. The best thing about all of this is that we use many of these herbs and spices for food flavoring. Talk about easy access to the type of healing medicine our body needs! How awesome that we could just go to our local market and head to the spices and herbs section.

Homeopathy

According to the National Institute of Health, more than 6 million people in the United States use homeopathy to treat specific health conditions, and over 200 million people use homeopathy on regular basis worldwide. Homeopathy is a form of medicine based on the idea that the body can heal itself. It uses small amounts of natural substances, such as plants and minerals, to stimulate the healing process. More than 8,000 homeopathic remedies are available over the counter and most users self-prescribe products for common issues, such as cold symptoms or mild pain.

Detoxification

Your body has a sophisticated way of eliminating toxins that involves the liver, kidneys, digestive system, skin, and lungs. It stems from your will-power and wanting to be healthier by eliminating certain toxins from your body such as alcohol, processed foods, and pollutants. Detoxing often involve the use of laxatives, diuretics, vitamins, minerals, teas, and other foods thought to have detoxing properties. However, there are many forms of detoxing outside of the common methods like adequate sleep, high-water consumption, reducing intake of sugar and processed foods, and being active.

Diet & Nutrition

I think we all know that along with exercise, eating right is just as vital. Believe it or not, what we eat affects how we feel and vice versa. That’s why eating disorders exist, including emotional eating. From plant-based to vegan, there are many healthy and tasty dishes that will satisfy your taste buds, as well as your waistline. When you eat lighter, you’ll feel lighter. When you eat heavy, you’ll feel heavy.

Body-Based Therapy

Naturopathy

The goal of naturopathic medicine is to treat the whole person — that means mind, body, and spirit. It also aims to heal the root causes of an illness — not just stop the symptoms.

A naturopathic doctor may spend 1 to 2 hours examining you. He’ll ask questions about your health history, stress levels, and lifestyle habits. He may order lab tests.

Acupressure

Acupressure is an alternative medicine technique similar in principle to acupuncture. It is based on the concept of life energy which flows through “meridians” in the body. In treatment, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians. Pressure may be applied by hand, by elbow or with various devices.

Reflexology

Reflexology, also known as zone therapy, is an alternative medical practice involving the application of pressure to specific points on the feet and hands. This is done using specific thumb, finger, and hand massage techniques without the use of oil or lotion.

Chiropractic Therapy

Chiropractors perform adjustments (manipulations) to the spine or other parts of the body. The goal is to correct alignment problems, ease pain, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Energy-Based Techniques

Crystal Healing

Crystal healing is a person who uses the power of crystals and its healing properties to remove negative energy caused by emotional, physical, psychological, and karmic distress.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a form of treatment that involves inserting very thin needles through a person’s skin at specific points on the body, to various depths. Research suggests that it can help relieve pain, and it is used for a wide range of other complaints.

Reiki Healing

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Yoga

Yoga is a combination of movement, breath, and meditation that aids in the reduction of stress and encourages mindfulness, flexibility and strength.
